Cam Newton found Greg Olsen over the middle for a 16-yard touchdown pass with 4:20 left to help the Carolina Panthers beat the Jacksonville Jaguars16-10 on Sunday.
Newton, the No. 1 overall draft pick in April, also found Olsen for the ensuing two-point conversion pass that helped Carolina rally from a 10-5 halftime deficit. The win marked coach Ron Rivera’s first with the Panthers (1-2).
Newton had thrown for more than 400 yards in each of his first two games, setting an NFL record with 854 passing yards in the first two games of his career. He finished with just 158 yards on 18-for-34 passing against the Jaguars (1-2) and their own highly drafted rookie quarterback, Blaine Gabbert. But Newton completed all three of his passes on the go-ahead drive for the winning score.
Gabbert, the 10th overall pick in the draft, threw for 139 yards and one touchdown in his starting debut.
