The Philadelphia Eagles announced today that Brian Westbrook would officially retire as a member of the team tomorrow during an 11:30 press conference.
To honor one of the best running backs in franchise history, the team will hold a ceremony during halftime of the December 23rd game against the Washington Redskins.
Here are statements from Jeffery Lurie on Westbrook:
Lurie: “I will always remember Brian for the electrifying, game-changing plays he made during his great career in Philadelphia. He was one of those players you knew could score from anywhere on the field and one of the most exciting players I have ever watched. He was a great runner, receiver and returner and was certainly a fan favorite. We are thrilled to have him retire as an Eagle and we look forward to honoring him at Lincoln Financial Field on December 23 against the Redskins in what should be a very exciting atmosphere.”
Westbrook left the team in 2009 as the franchises leader with 9,785 yards from scrimmage. He is one of only 6 players in league history to post 30-plus rushing touchdowns (41) and receiving touchdowns (30).
Westbrook will always be remembered for his electrifying plays, but this one is probably the play that fans will always remember- and started his run as the great running back that he was.
